Below are selected examples of projects Townstone has worked on recently.
Townstone acted as Development Management Advisor to The St Albans Museum and Galleries Trust and St Albans City and District Council.
Following public consultation Townstone, in conjunction with the Local Authority Estates Department, Architect and Agent, designed the residential redevelopment of the site. The site’s development helped raise funds for the New Museum and Gallery project in the City Centre.
Acquisition, design and planning permission by Townstone.
The building fronting the highway is a Listed C16 (re-fronted C18) building. Planning permission for D class use was received for this building and the property was sold to a dentist requiring a commercial frontage. Planning permission for 7 dwellings was designed and received for the rear part of the site.
St Peters Mews received a St Albans Civic Society Award.
Townstone acted as Development Management Consultant
Townstone acted for St Albans City and District Council on the land management issues relating to the project. Amongst the tasks, Townstone helped The Council acquire the land parcels not in The Council’s ownership so that the Council has full ownership control of the redevelopment of this major site.
Townstone acquired this site unconditionally and with a commercial tenancy. It was designed, planning permission was received, built and sold by Townstone. The Building had a typical asymmetrical industrial roof with roof lights.
These features were used to create unusual, contemporary houses and apartments off a private courtyard in the centre of St Albans. The development received a Civic Society and RIBA award.
Argyle Walk is a refurbishment of a Victorian building located half a mile south of St Pancras International Station. Townstone obtained planning permission and converted the building into 4 flats.
The completed development was a finalist in Camden Council’s Build Quality Awards.
Land acquisition, design and planning permission by Townstone.
By staggering the upper floors Townstone’s design idea creates an attractive street elevation and allows each dwelling to have a balcony with south-west facing windows. The development has been a catalyst for urban regeneration in this part of the City centre.
Townstone acted for the Operators of the Rex Cinema in Berkhamsted. Townstone negotiated the Odyssey property acquisition with the developer owners.
Meanwhile the Rex Operators ran a public fundraising campaign to pay for the building.
They and the public succeeded, the property was acquired and the Odyssey cinema was born.
This site was a development management service involving the design optimisation, refurbishment and construction of 5 terraced houses in what was an old Chinese Restaurant.
The project received a Civic Society award.
Site acquired, designed, planning permission received, built and sold by Townstone. The development is a conversion of St Peter’s Farm buildings dating back to 1820.
The result is 6 freehold houses around a courtyard within half a mile of St Albans City Station.
The site received a Civic Society Award.

Rosedene is a site of 6 new detached houses off a private drive in Chiswell Green.
Taverners Place is a Townstone development of 15 houses in Codicote. The Listed Building was in a near derelict state.
Townstone worked collaboratively with Codicote Parish Council and the Planning Authority to bring about the restoration of the Listed Buildings and a number of architecturally sympathetic new homes.
The design gives each house its own freehold and its own front door. There are no internal communal spaces.
This Conservation area scheme has restored the building to its external Victorian beauty while producing eight freehold and internally contemporary houses. It received a Civic Society Award.
Townstone has received many positive comments from a range of people and businesses...
An effective restoration of five cottages… an object lesson in the recreation of residential use where commercial has lost its relevance.
After weeks of negotiations and fundraising the land contract for the acquisition of the Odyssey is finally agreed. ‘A ridiculous achievement Graeme. Fantastic. Well done and thank you.’
Experienced and trustworthy, Townstone optimised and improved the value of our site and gave us stress free development management of the project team from start to finish.
The houses are all beautifully designed and finished… old and new buildings have been integrated with great care and respect. We congratulate Townstone on their achievement.
The trustees are thrilled to see how well your vision and ours has come together to create a development that allows the Charity to move forward and which enhances this area of Avenue Road.
Thank you for your hard work, dedication and for the considerable skill and knowledge that you have brought to the CCOS North and South projects.
